We spent last week in our beach house in Avon, NC Outer Banks, my favorite place to fish. We had my wife, my daughter, the daughter of the daughter of a friend and boyfriend and me. I knew that at the beginning of the fishing and the water temperature was not as high as I would, but there is rarely a week this time of year, when my wife and my daughter both have the same Spring Break week, so we decided to take advantage leisure.
Do check the weather before leaving, I knew that on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday will be the best day of the week to catch fish. Everybody was tired of the long road down, so we slept in late morning on Saturday and made catch some fish for lunch on Saturday. I stopped in my favorite bait and tackle Avon to pick up bait and ice and see where the fish could be biting. My friend in the bait shop told us the fish does not bite, but the bay scallops were abundant in the sound, and the top is down near Hatteras.
Everyone wanted fresh fish for dinner, then we went to the point that fish and decided to try St. Jacques shells on Sunday.
As I suspected, and when we were told there was no fish. We fished to the point that bites and even went to Frisco and fished without success. Fishing is a big zero. We bought some shrimp for dinner Saturday night. Sunday morning, I dragged my dip, crab and two five gallon bucket and we decided to Hatteras to find clams. There is a movement in the parking lot just north of Hatteras, and we have learned to park. I tore my thigh last year and had not yet replaced, so we waded in jeans and boat shoes. The water was about 55 degrees, and after about 5 minutes of our legs and feet were numb, but the train was right, the scallops were abundant.
Using the dip net and crab dug your sound, place them in a bucket. In about two hours, we had two five gallon buckets half. We were cold and wet, but had been very successful in getting dinner on Sunday. Unfortunately, the catch of scallops was the easy part. We spent most of Sunday afternoon peeling and cleaning the scallops, and you do not eat the muscle that opens and closes the shell. The inner membrane of the shell-Jacques should be removed from the muscle, which is a tedious job.
However, it does not end with nearly 2 kilos of fresh tender, sweet scallops, one of the best Ive eaten. Maybe it was the work that went into capturing clean, however, were delicious. Indeed, the only fish we caught all week was a dogfish or sand shark.
